Snowflake for Developers/Guides/Build an Industrial Operations Intelligence Agent
Quickstart

Build an Industrial Operations Intelligence Agent

Cortex Analyst
Reinout Korbee

Overview

Industrial operations questions rarely stay inside one system. A production disruption can coincide with quality issues, reduce available inventory, and increase fulfillment backlog. This guide develops a connected example that can support those investigations through one conversational experience.

Prerequisites

  • Basic familiarity with Snowflake SQL and Snowsight.
  • Basic understanding of production, quality, and supply-chain concepts.

What You'll Need

  • A Snowflake account with access to Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search, and Cortex Agents.
  • Permissions to create a warehouse and the other objects used in the guide.

What You'll Learn

  • Translate production, quality, and supply-chain investigations into agent capabilities.
  • Define reusable semantic views with consistent operational metrics.
  • Configure one agent to route questions to domain Analysts and retrieve supporting documentation.
  • Combine operational measurements and documentary evidence without inventing relationships or causes.
  • Test answers, follow-ups, tool selection, and unsupported questions in Snowflake Intelligence.

What You'll Build

You will build an agent over a connected synthetic data foundation: three sites, two products, six assets, 540 production runs, inspection summaries, maintenance events, and daily supply balances. Three domain semantic views support Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain analysis. Two Search tools retrieve fictional investigation notes and analytical review workflows.

The guide includes SQL to create the views, Search services, and agent, followed by sample questions with expected answers for testing in Snowflake Intelligence. Business definitions live in the semantic views, while the agent handles tool selection and evidence-backed responses.

Understand the Scenario

The data covers January 1 through March 31, 2026. Each site has two assets, each assigned to a different product, and each asset produces one run per day. That deliberately makes the production-run grain equivalent to site-product-day in this tutorial.

A scripted disruption affects asset A-001 at site S-01 from February 10 through February 16. Those runs have more downtime and rejected units, reducing usable production. Daily demand continues, consumes inventory, and eventually produces backlog. After the disruption, excess production clears the backlog.

All names, quantities, dates, documents, and relationships are fictional. The injected relationship makes the example explainable; it does not establish that a statistical association proves causation in a real factory.

The SQL uses fixed dates, arithmetic, and GENERATOR rather than random or AI-generated values. Rebuilding in a fresh database produces the same records.

Start with three investigations

The same operational disruption raises different questions for production, quality, and supply teams. Each investigation starts with a business concern, follows up on the initial answer, and checks the evidence behind it.

Three parallel investigations: Production manager follows lost output through a previous-week comparison to downtime, output, and availability evidence; Quality lead follows rejection-rate changes to inspected and rejected quantities; Supply planner follows fulfillment backlog through recovery to dated inventory and backlog balances.

Together, these investigations connect lost output, quality variation, and fulfillment exposure without treating their association as proof of a cause. They give the agent a clear purpose: help users move from an operational question to a supported answer, keeping the relevant dates, entities, and metric definitions consistent across follow-ups.

Architecture and reusable semantics

To support these investigations, one agent brings together domain analysis and document retrieval. Reusable semantic views define what the operational data means, while the agent selects the appropriate tools and presents the evidence in a single conversation.

Architecture with two labeled tool groups: blue Cortex Analyst tools query Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain semantic views; purple Cortex Search tools retrieve documents through Procedures and Documentation Search and Operational Knowledge Search.

Cortex Analyst tools — structured data (blue)

These tools answer quantitative questions through semantic views. The three core domains are:

  • Manufacturing, including equipment and downtime;
  • Quality, for inspection and quality evidence; and
  • Supply Chain, for inventory and fulfillment. Personas guide the investigations, not separate agents or copies of the same metrics.

Equipment remains a Manufacturing dimension rather than a separate Asset Analyst.

Cortex Search tools — document retrieval (purple)

These two tools retrieve supporting text rather than calculate operational metrics:

  • Procedures and Documentation Search: documented review workflows, including version, applicability, and approval status.
  • Operational Knowledge Search: investigation notes and historical context explaining production, quality, and supply topics.

The tools use separate document collections. In this tutorial, both collections contain fictional examples, not approved industrial procedures.

Define Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain semantic views containing the business definitions used by the agent's Analyst tools. Keeping these definitions outside agent instructions allows additional consumers to use the same views. The direct semantic SQL checks below query the same view objects used by the agent; reuse by a second application or agent is not tested here.

Prepare the Environment

Select a development role that can create warehouses and databases. Run every block in order in the same session. The guide does not change account-level settings.

Create an extra-small warehouse and a database for the tutorial objects:

CREATE WAREHOUSE IF NOT EXISTS INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_WH
    WAREHOUSE_SIZE = XSMALL
    AUTO_SUSPEND = 60
    AUTO_RESUME = TRUE
    INITIALLY_SUSPENDED = TRUE;
USE WAREHOUSE INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_WH;

CREATE OR REPLACE DATABASE INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_DEMO;
USE DATABASE INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_DEMO;
CREATE OR REPLACE SCHEMA DEMO;
USE SCHEMA DEMO;

Production runs

Each run has a 480-minute planned operating window and a target of 1,000 units. Produced units include both accepted and rejected units. A deterministic variation keeps the unaffected runs from being identical.

Quality results and maintenance

Quality results contain one inspection summary per run. Rejected units are already part of production; do not add them a second time when joining. Maintenance events contain one fictional repair event per disrupted run. Their repair duration equals that run's downtime by construction, not by a general business rule.

Daily supply and inventory

Each site-product combination starts with 100 units of inventory and receives demand for 930 units per day. Available good production and opening inventory satisfy current demand and any opening backlog. Unfulfilled demand carries forward without cancellation. There are no transfers, scrap after inspection, or shipping delays in this simplified model.

SHIPPED_UNITS can exceed that day's new demand while clearing prior backlog. This is an aggregate daily flow model, not an order-line or on-time-delivery dataset. Do not calculate on-time delivery from it.

CREATE TABLE SUPPLY_DAILY AS

CREATE VIEW INVENTORY_DAILY AS
SELECT RUN_DATE, SITE_ID, PRODUCT_ID,

Inventory and backlog are end-of-day balances: compare them at a specific date, rather than summing them over dates as if they were flows.

Fictional investigation notes

These short documents provide the content for Operational Knowledge Search. They describe analytical investigations only; they are not approved maintenance procedures or instructions to operate machinery.

CREATE TABLE OPERATIONS_DOCUMENTS AS
SELECT column1::VARCHAR AS DOCUMENT_ID,
       column2::VARCHAR AS TITLE,
       column3::VARCHAR AS DOCUMENT_TEXT
FROM VALUES
    ('DOC-01', 'Investigating lost production',
     'FICTIONAL DEMO ONLY. Compare production, downtime, and inspection results for the same asset and run date. Describe observed associations. Do not infer a real equipment fault or recommend changing machine settings from this demo.'),
    ('DOC-02', 'Reviewing quality variation',
     'FICTIONAL DEMO ONLY. Compare rejected units with inspected units across the selected runs. Use the ratio of summed rejected units to summed inspected units, not an unweighted average of daily percentages.'),
    ('DOC-03', 'Reviewing fulfillment exposure',
     'FICTIONAL DEMO ONLY. Compare opening inventory, accepted production, new demand, shipments, and closing backlog for the same site, product, and day. Backlog carries forward. This dataset does not contain individual order promises or delivery timestamps.');

The seed script produces 3 sites, 2 products, 6 assets, 540 production runs, 540 quality results, 7 maintenance events, 540 daily supply rows, and 3 documents. The INVENTORY_DAILY view exposes 540 rows. These are expected counts to verify when testing the guide in a development account.

Create the Domain Semantic Views

With the data in place, define the business meaning that the Analyst tools will use. Create one semantic view for each domain: Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain. Their relationships describe valid joins, while their metrics specify calculations and aggregation behavior.

Run the following sections after the data-generation steps, using the same database name throughout. The SQL is included in full; do not also run the matching asset files against the same objects. All blocks use the INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_WH warehouse created during setup, including the agent specification.

The examples create new objects rather than replacing existing ones. Search indexing and agent requests incur charges when you run them. The reference results below are expectations derived from the seed rules; running the checks in your account establishes whether the deployed objects produce them.

Metric definitions

Apply the selected site, product, asset where available, and inclusive date range before aggregation. Require an explicit date for snapshot questions; retain that scope in follow-ups. Return an undefined rate, not zero, when its denominator is zero. Round only the displayed result.

Manufacturing covers output, equipment downtime, availability, and maintenance context. Event records link to runs, but repair minutes are not added to downtime because they overlap in this dataset.

Supply Chain semantic view

Daily demand and shipments are additive flows. Inventory and backlog are snapshots: NON ADDITIVE BY selects the latest date in each query group for closing balances and the earliest for opening balances. All site-products have the same daily coverage here; sparse real-world snapshots would need an explicit alignment policy.

Create the Document Search Services

Create two distinct search collections: fictional review workflows for Procedures and Documentation Search, and the existing investigation notes for Operational Knowledge Search. The workflow examples below demonstrate version, applicability, and approval metadata; they are not approved industrial procedures. They do not authorize machinery changes or product release.

Creation initializes each index synchronously. The final DESCRIBE statements should show nonempty source data (two procedure documents and three investigation notes), no indexing error, and running serving state before you create the agent.

Create the Agent and Analyst Tools

The agent brings the three domain views and two search collections into one conversation. Cortex Analyst tools are entries in the agent specification, not separate objects created by a CREATE TOOL statement. Each tool name must match its entry under tool_resources.

DESCRIBE AGENT INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_DEMO.DEMO.INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_AGENT;

Test the Agent in Snowflake Intelligence

The agent can be used directly in Snowflake Intelligence. Open AI & ML > Snowflake Intelligence (or ai.snowflake.com), select Industrial Operations Intelligence, and choose one of the sample questions. Users need USAGE on the agent and access to its semantic views, Search services, and warehouse. If your account curates visible agents with a Snowflake Intelligence object, an administrator adds it with ALTER SNOWFLAKE INTELLIGENCE SNOWFLAKE_INTELLIGENCE_OBJECT_DEFAULT ADD AGENT INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_DEMO.DEMO.INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_AGENT;.

Ask the sample questions and compare the answers with the expected results below. The values follow from the generation rules; check quantities exactly and displayed percentages within 0.01 percentage points.

Sample questionExpected toolExpected answer
Which asset had the most downtime during February 10-16, 2026?Manufacturing AnalystA-001, 1,260 downtime minutes. No physical root cause.
How did the rejected-unit rate for A-001 change between February 3-9 and February 10-16, 2026? Show the quantities.Quality Analyst89 / 6,902 = 1.29%, then 490 / 4,900 = 10.00%: an increase of 8.71 percentage points.
What was the closing backlog for S-01 and P-01 on February 16, 2026, and when did it next reach zero?Supply Chain Analyst500 backlog units and zero inventory on February 16; backlog next reaches zero on March 1, 2026, with 16 inventory units.
Which fictional investigation note explains the daily supply balance?Operational Knowledge SearchDOC-03, Reviewing fulfillment exposure: backlog carries forward; order promises and delivery timestamps are absent.
What does the inspection metric review workflow say, and is it an approved procedure?Procedures and Documentation SearchPROC-DEMO-01, version 1.0, status DEMO_ONLY_NOT_APPROVED; rate is summed rejected divided by summed inspected units.
Which customer orders were delivered late at S-01 on February 16, 2026?NoneThe dataset has no customer orders or delivery timestamps; no invented orders.

Then ask a follow-up in the same conversation, such as "For that asset, compare output and availability with February 3-9, 2026." The agent should keep A-001 and report 6,902 produced units and 97.08% availability for February 3-9, against 4,900 units and 62.50% for February 10-16.

Ask the agent from SQL

You can also send a sample question with SNOWFLAKE.CORTEX.DATA_AGENT_RUN. The function returns the full agent response as JSON, including the answer text, generated SQL, query results, and citations. Each call is a regular agent request and runs with your role's privileges. Replace the question text to test the other sample questions.

Compare the answer and the tool results in the response with the expected answers above.

Clean Up

Run this only after finishing the tutorial and confirming that the named database contains only the objects you created for it. If you chose another name during setup, update it here. This removes the tutorial agent, both Search services, all semantic views, tables, and ordinary views in this database. The final statement drops the tutorial warehouse.

DROP DATABASE INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_DEMO;
DROP WAREHOUSE INDUSTRIAL_OPERATIONS_WH;

Conclusion And Resources

The guide connects synthetic operational data to three domain semantic views, two document-search tools, and one agent. Sample questions with expected answers test routing, numeric results, follow-up context, and documentary evidence.

What You Learned

  • Translate production, quality, and supply investigations into domain semantic views and agent tools.
  • Define rates and snapshot metrics with explicit aggregation behavior.
  • Configure one agent to retrieve structured results and supporting documents.
  • Test answers, tool use, follow-ups, and unsupported questions against expected results.
