The beginning of 2022 brought a number of high-profile additions to Snowflake. Both unstructured data support and Snowpark (Scala API and Java UDFs) are generally available, which can be extra powerful when paired together. Snowpark can be used to process unstructured data, for example, natural language processing text files and DICOM images, directly in Snowflake. And migrations from legacy systems are now a lot simpler with Snowflake Scripting in public preview. Read on to see the full breadth of announcements from January.
Modern Architecture
Support for unstructured data now in GA
Snowflake’s support for unstructured data includes built-in capabilities to store, access, process, manage, govern, and share unstructured data in Snowflake. Now you can manage and analyze your data–structured, semi-structured, and unstructured–across clouds in one seamless experience. Watch how to get started.
Data Programmability
Snowpark now in GA
Snowpark is all about extensibility. It was designed to let data engineers, data scientists, and other developers work with data more efficiently and effectively in their programming languages and tools of choice—including Scala, Python (in private preview), and Java—using familiar programming constructs such as DataFrames. And it was built to move that work right to where the data lives: in Snowflake’s scalable, secure compute engine. Learn more.
Platform Optimization
Snowflake Scripting in preview
Snowflake Scripting, a new procedural language to create and save complex SQL flows, is now in public preview. It allows users to translate, write scripts, and write stored procedures in SQL—in addition to JavaScript stored procedures, which is already available. For anyone looking to migrate legacy data warehouses to the cloud, migrations are getting a lot simpler. Get started using Snowflake Scripting today.
Pipeline Observability & Experience
Improve pipeline visibility and experience
Snowflake users can now improve their pipeline visibility by using the copy history dashboard. This dashboard shows a 365-day view of copy history for bulk data loads (i.e., using the COPY INTO <table> command) and Snowpipe to gain better visibility into data ingestion.
What’s also available in preview is a new error notification feature for Snowpipe. When Snowpipe encounters errors while loading data from a staged file, this feature triggers a notification that describes the errors using cloud messaging—enabling further analysis of the data in the file.

Global Governance
Conditionally mask data based on other column(s) now in GA
Users can now create data-masking policies based on multiple conditional columns, making access policies more flexible and data easier to manage. Conditional masking policies can be applied to multiple tables and views. Learn more.
