Runkeeper Delivers Data-driven Insights 135 Times Faster with Snowflake

Mobile fitness app provides 50 million users stellar experience with the no. 1 cloud data warehouse
SAN MATEO (August 24th, 2017) — Snowflake Computing, the only data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced that Runkeeper, a leading mobile fitness app, chose Snowflake to give its business analysts rapid access to data-driven insight to deliver new and engaging features of the Runkeeper app. Using Snowflake, Runkeeper’s analytics performance is now more than 135 times faster than before.
Millions of users across the world rely on Runkeeper to track workouts, set goals, and connect with the community to stay motivated. Every time users create events, such as starting a run, sharing with a friend or responding to a push notification, they generate data that helps Runkeeper understand how to improve the customer experience.
Prior to going live on Snowflake, Runkeeper’s previous data warehouse presented them with a series of ongoing difficulties related to concurrency and the ability to get information into and out of the platform quickly.
Runkeeper users generate more than one billion events every month, making the amount of speed and concurrency available to them through their data warehouse critical. Today, with Snowflake, they process two years of data 135 times faster than they could previously. “Now we’re able to focus on the data as opposed to focusing on the processing,” said Karla Goodreau, director of platforms at Runkeeper. “When things go wrong, it no longer takes two days of somebody’s time to catch up our processing, which means we can now react a lot faster to our customer’s needs.”
Runkeeper also harnesses Snowflake Data Sharing to access live data from its marketing analytics partner. The previous process for obtaining data was time consuming and costly, requiring significant engineering work anytime changes were made to the data. Snowflake Data Sharing extends the data warehouse to the Data Sharehouse™, enabling Runkeeper to combine its app data with information from third-party sources to get a more holistic view of user behavior in seconds. This process removes the cost and delays to give Runkeeper’s product, marketing, engineering, and platforms teams instant, secure access to critical data.
“Runkeeper’s success is a great example of the gains in analytics performance and insight our customers experience with Snowflake,” Snowflake CEO, Bob Muglia says. “We’re proud to help Runkeeper create a better, more engaging experience for its users.”
