Understanding Snowflake Pricing

Snowflake’s platform powers the Data Cloud by eliminating the complexity, cost, and constraints inherent with other approaches. Available as a service on leading cloud providers, Snowflake eliminates architectural complexity, so you can run many workloads with the elasticity, performance and scale required by the modern enterprise.

The Snowflake architecture separates data warehousing into three distinct layers: storage, virtual warehouses (compute), and cloud services. Snowflake pricing is based on the actual usage of these layers and of serverless features.

Storage

A monthly fee for data stored in Snowflake is calculated using the average amount of storage used per month, after compression, for data ingested into Snowflake. Depending on file types, compression can reduce the total storage needs substantially.

Virtual Warehouses (Compute)

A virtual warehouse is one or more compute clusters that enable customers to load data and perform queries. Customers pay for virtual warehouses using Snowflake credits.

Cloud Services

The cloud services layer provides all permanent state management and overall coordination of Snowflake. Customers pay for cloud services using Snowflake credits.

What is a Snowflake credit?

Snowflake credits are used to pay for the consumption of resources on Snowflake. A Snowflake credit is a unit of measure, and it is consumed only when a customer is using resources, such as when a virtual warehouse is running, the cloud services layer is performing work, or serverless features are used.

VIRTUAL WAREHOUSES (COMPUTE)

Snowflake supports a wide range of virtual warehouse sizes: X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2X-Large, 3X-Large, and 4X-Large. The size of the virtual warehouse determines how fast queries will run. When a virtual warehouse is not running (that is, when it is set to sleep mode), it does not consume any Snowflake credits. The different sizes of virtual warehouses consume Snowflake credits at the following rates, billed by the second with a one-minute minimum.

CLOUD SERVICES

Cloud services resources are automatically assigned by Snowflake based on the requirements of the workload. Typical utilization of cloud services (up to 10% of daily compute credits) is included for free, which means most customers will not see incremental charges for cloud services usage.

Snowflake offers the following additional serverless features that use Snowflake-managed compute resources and consume Snowflake credits when they are used.

Search Optimization Service
  • Greatly speed up point lookup queries in massive tables
  • Pair SOS with smaller virtual warehouses to lower costs

Buying the Snowflake service

There are two ways to buy the Snowflake Service: On Demand or pre-paid Capacity.

The easiest and most flexible way to purchase the Snowflake Service is On Demand. Similar to Amazon AWS, customers are charged

Data Transfer

Customers who wish to move or copy their data between regions or clouds will incur data transfer charges. Features such as External Tables, External Functions and Data Lake Export may incur data transfer charges.

Pricing Examples

The cost of the Snowflake service is determined by actual usage which varies based on the individual customer application. Most Snowflake customers gain experience using Snowflake On Demand. That allows the application workload to be developed and tested and provides real-world experience to estimate the monthly cost. When the application workload is understood, an appropriately sized Capacity purchase can be made. Here are two different examples of Snowflake Capacity pricing:

  • Pricing Example 1

    Customer has purchased the Snowflake Capacity Standard Service with Premier Support in the United States. They load data every night and have 8 users using the database during business hours. This customer:

    • Stores an average of 4 TB’s of compressed data (compare with 20 TB without compression).
    • Runs a batch loading task every night for 2.5 hours, using a Small Standard Virtual Warehouse.
    • Enables eight users to work 5 days a week from 8am until 6pm using a Medium Standard Virtual Warehouse.
