Snowflake Computing Named a Cool Vendor by Gartner

Vendors selected for the ‘Cool Vendor’ report are innovative, impactful and intriguing

SAN MATEO, Calif. – April 30, 2015Snowflake Computing, the cloud data warehousing company, today announced it has been included in the list of “Cool Vendors” in the “Cool Vendors in DBMS, 2015” report by Gartner, Inc. Snowflake is one of three vendors recognized in the report, which focuses on how the database management market is expanding to meet new requirements driven by cloud opportunities and challenges, big data types and use cases.

“Cloud deployment options for DBMS have emerged as a viable approach — when application characteristics for data volume, security, and integration fit,” said Adam Ronthal, Research Director; Merv Adrian, Research VP; and Nick Heudecker, Research Director at Gartner. “Designing DBMSs for the cloud is driving new approaches to architecture, such as decoupling compute and storage, to enhance elasticity to meet uneven usage profiles. IT leaders and architects should evaluate vendors that can help make the adoption of cloud easier – both from DBMS and a management perspective.”

The Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse delivers the power of data warehousing, the flexibility of big data platforms and the elasticity of the cloud—at a 90 percent lower cost than on-premises data warehouses. Its patent-pending architecture decouples data storage from compute, making it uniquely able to take advantage of the elasticity, scalability and flexibility of the cloud. Because it is a relational database with full support for standard SQL, Snowflake empowers any analyst with self-service access to data so that organizations can take advantage of the tools and skills that they already have.

“We believe being named a Gartner ‘Cool Vendor’ speaks to the innovative nature of our product and how we’re truly reinventing data warehousing,” said Bob Muglia, CEO of Snowflake. “The market interest in the Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse has proven the demand for a revolution in data warehousing. Our elasticity, native support for semi-structured data, and compelling price : performance make it possible to bring together all data, all workloads and all users in a true data warehouse as a service.”

Snowflake was founded to reinvent the data warehouse. Snowflake’s team of data experts from companies including Actian, Amazon, Cloudera, Google, Microsoft, Oracle and Teradata holds more than 120 patents in databases and data processing. That team developed an all-new data warehouse, built from the ground up for the cloud.
