Snowflake Announces Multi-Cloud General Availability in Canada

Expanding Canadian demand delivers the cloud-built data warehouse to a wider and global customer base

SAN MATEO, Calif. – August 6, 2019Snowflake, the data warehouse built for the cloud, today announced the general availability of Snowflake on both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in Canada. The expansion reflects the surge in customer demand for Snowflake in Canada driven by the continued movement of Canadian companies to the cloud as they seek a faster, more efficient and local approach to managing their data. Snowflake on AWS and Microsoft Azure provides these organizations with the flexibility of choosing a cloud offering that best serves their business and customers, in addition to utilizing each cloud’s ecosystem of applications and tools.

Snowflake leverages AWS and Microsoft Azure infrastructure services for data storage and query processing and supports popular BI and ETL tools from both cloud providers. Snowflake’s unique offering also includes innovations such as secure, modern data sharing and the Data Exchange, which will be generally available later this year.

Snowflake’s deployment across AWS and Microsoft Azure is designed to empower Canadian customers such as Toronto Star, Alberta Motor Association,  Wolseley Canada, SSQ Insurance, Environics Analytics, Globe and Mail and Lightspeed to leverage the instant elasticity, unlimited concurrency, and per-second pricing of their cloud-built data warehouse. This expansion will continue Snowflake’s efforts to support its customers with operations in Canada that want to keep their data local. Local availability provides customers with fast, low-latency access to their data, while accelerating their global data initiatives by satisfying their country-specific data needs.

Michael O’Neill, Managing Director, Digital and Data Science at Globe and Mail, the Canadian newspaper said, “The volume and complexity of the data that underpins The Globe’s operations has increased dramatically over the past few years, as have the demands to draw insights from this data.  Snowflake has enabled us to meet these demands in a process that is readily scalable, manageable, and crucially, accessible to broad set of analysts, many of whom would previously have found working on these vast datasets insurmountably onerous using other tools.”

Simon Latouche, Director Data Engineering at SSQ Insurance, the Canadian insurance company said: “Thanks to Snowflake we can now concentrate our effort on value-added tasks providing faster insights and higher performance. Being able to manage our data efficiently and cost-effectively is a critical part of our business operations and overall success. I’m convinced that our partnership with Snowflake on Azure will enable the continued success of SSQ Insurance’s data journey.”

“The speed at which Canadian businesses are moving to the cloud is accelerating as they realize that it’s the best solution for fast, secure and efficient access to data insights,” Snowflake’s VP of Product, Christian Kleinerman said. “The general availability of Snowflake’s cloud-built data warehouse on AWS and Microsoft Azure in Canada is a great example of Snowflake delivering on its mission to break down data barriers. Our Canadian customers are increasingly looking to establish a global market share – and, in some cases, global dominance – powered by the agility of cloud computing operations.”
