Equifax: Ability to Pay Index™

A holistic measure of household estimated economic capacity that incorporates income, spending, and credit


Derived from our proprietary financial assets database, Ability to Pay™ Index incorporates income, spending, and credit to provide a more complete estimated measure of economic capacity than using only one of these measures alone.

As a household-level scoring system, Ability to Pay Index delivers a continuous measure ranging from 1 to 1,000, with a rating of 1,000 being the most likely to have higher economic capacity and ability to pay.

The model offers a robust economic filter that incorporates the intersection of three key components:
estimated total household income (based on income from wages and assets)
discretionary spending
aggregated credit

Ability to Pay Index can be bundled with other financial capacity measures such as Income360®, Affluence Index™, or Spending Power™ to provide an even more granular view of household disposable income.
