CARTO: Spatial Extension

Spatial functions to enhance Snowflake's GIS capabilities


The CARTO Spatial Extension is composed of a set of user-defined functions that extend the geospatial capabilities of Snowflake. These functions are organized in a set of modules, each corresponding to a different schema of the database. We currently offer eleven modules supporting different spatial indexes an other geospatial operations: quadkeys, H3, S2, placekey, clustering, geometry constructors, accessors, transformations, etc.

In order to get started using the CARTO Spatial Extension it’s preferable to name the local database that you create from the listing as „SFCARTO“. This way all your queries will match the example queries that you’ll find both on this listing and on our documentation pages.

On our documentation page you’ll find the comprehensive list of available functions, their definition and fully working code samples. We will be including new functionality regularly, which will be automatically available to you.

The Spatial Extension is currently in BETA and freely available to use for all Snowflake users. All modules categorized as „core“ (see documentation) will always remain free, but that won’t be the case for the „advanced“ modules.
