DATA TRENDS 2023

Four ways to get more from your data and AI

We know that data is essential to business. It’s driving new AI-powered opportunities, greater productivity, and entire new industries. Every business is looking to embrace the potential generative AI brings to the table, improve efficiency, and redefine what’s possible with data.

Snowflake looked at data from its customers to understand what companies are doing with their data, right now, and how they are setting themselves up for success in the new age of generative AI and LLMs.

Download the Snowflake Data Trends 2023 Report to learn:

  • How a 207% spike in customers operating across the three leading public cloud providers points to the growing need for data and applications to communicate globally and across clouds
  • The simple but essential technique that companies are using to turn strong data governance into a business and AI accelerator
  • The rising trend in automation that helps organizations increase cost efficiency while giving developers and data scientists the ability to innovate with generative AI faster

Key Trends From Customer Data

Dive into data from more than 7,800 customers* using the Data Cloud

Trend 1

Companies Are Connecting Data Everywhere They Can

McKinsey’s No. 1 prediction* for how data will be used in 2025 is that it will be “embedded in every interaction, and process.” This becomes even more important as massive AI models become a part of every business. In Snowflake’s Data Cloud, we’re seeing business prepare for that AI-focused future.

CROSS-CLOUD

The number of organizations with data across all three major public clouds grew 207%.

RESILIENCE

Forbes Global 2000 businesses doing cross-cloud data replication increased by 58%.

COLLABORATION

The number of stable edges increased by 93%, indicating ongoing value from connecting data.

TREND 2

STATE-OF-THE-ART COMPANIES ARE BRINGING THEIR WORK AND AI TO THE DATA, NOT VICE VERSA

Normally, there’s a cumbersome, resource-intensive process of collecting and preparing the right data set for whatever work you plan to do. Snowflake lets users work on their AI-solutions where the data resides, creating tremendous efficiencies, and the data shows that they’re embracing it.

 64 %

INCREASE IN JOBS

The number of jobs run in the Data Cloud rose 64%.

 88 %

PYTHON

In February 2023, Python accounted for nearly 88% of all jobs run on Snowpark.

20,000

JOBS A MINUTE

One customer ran more than 900 million jobs in January 2023 alone — averaging out to about 20,000 jobs a minute.

Trend 3:
GOVERNANCE MATTERS MORE THAN EVER IN THE NEW AI ERA

Regional data regulations have proliferated across the last decade — GDPR, CCPA, and many others — along with the threat of fines and bad press. Our user data proves increased attention is being paid to governance. As modern enterprises use generative AI and LLMs to extract insights from their own data, a single, consistent governance model is indispensable. One way to see how much attention is being paid to data protection is to look at how often masking policies are set to limit access to the right users at the right times.

  • Across the Snowflake Data Cloud, the number of applied masking policies had grown more than 205%.

Trend 4:
AUTOMATION IS A SILO-BUSTER THAT WILL POWER AI

The only way to work at scale, and across your full range of data types and formats, is by skillfully employing automation. As data teams look to bring generative AI and LLMs in house, a platform that can adjust to the unpredictability of resource requirements will be essential. To see whether organizations are equipped for that, we reviewed automation usage. A basic example is resizing compute resources to optimize for performance and efficiency.

  • In January 2023, Snowflake performed millions of automated warehouse resize events a day to adapt to customer needs.
  • That represents an 71% rise from January 2022.
