Snowflake is excited to announce that it is now available for preview on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in the us-central1 (Iowa) region. Customers who are interested in trying Snowflake on GCP can register for a preview account here.

In addition to the us-central1 (Iowa) region, Snowflake on GCP will also be available in the europe-west4 (Netherlands) region when we reach general availability (GA), scheduled for February 2020.

Since we announced our partnership with Google Cloud at the Snowflake Summit in June, we have been working closely with the Google Cloud team to deliver the performance, scalability, and reliability of Snowflake on GCP that Snowflake customers have come to expect. Snowflake is leveraging the latest generation of Google Compute Engine (GCE) virtual machines and provides tight integration with Google Cloud Storage (GCS), making it easy for customers to stage data in their own storage buckets for fast ingestion into Snowflake.

“We’re delighted that Snowflake is expanding availability on Google Cloud,” said Manvinder Singh, Director, IaaS/PaaS partnerships at Google Cloud. “Bringing Snowflake to Google Cloud enables customers to run their cloud-native data warehousing solution with Google Cloud’s infrastructure and take advantage of our core capabilities such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and analytics.”

Snowflake on GCP is fully compatible with Snowflake on other supported cloud providers, so that customers can easily migrate their existing workloads to the cloud of their choice. Customers can also choose to run in a cross-cloud environment for maximum business continuity.

One of the features that we have made available in the Snowflake on GCP preview is Tri-Secret Secure, which lets customers control access to their data using a master encryption key maintained in Google Cloud Key Management Service (KMS). Tri-Secret Secure requires the Business Critical Edition (or higher) of Snowflake.

In addition to providing a fully compatible Snowflake environment on GCP, we are working on integrating Snowflake with Google Cloud’s Big Data Analytics platform. This will include:

  • Support for the Snowflake Connector for Spark running in Google Cloud Dataproc
  • Support for  Snowpipe auto-ingestion using Google Cloud Pub/Sub
  • Integration with Cloud Data Fusion, GCP’s data integration service
  • Integration with Cloud Dataflow, Google Cloud’s fully-managed service for stream and batch processing

We’ll be introducing Snowflake on GCP at the Google Cloud NEXT ‘19 UK conference, November 20–21 in London. Visit us at Booth #F17.
