Support for unstructured data is now in public preview! That’s one of many of the exciting announcements made in September, in addition to a new serverless tasks feature, expanded public cloud regions, enhanced business continuity capabilities, and several new providers on Snowflake Data Marketplace.

CORE PLATFORM

Support for Unstructured Data

Snowflake support for unstructured data, now in public preview, makes it possible for organizations to manage and analyze all their data–structured, semi-structured, and unstructured—across clouds in one seamless experience. DATA PIPELINES

Taking Serverless to Tasks

Snowflake tasks allow users to schedule the execution of a SQL statement. With serverless tasks, now in public preview, Snowflake takes care of the heavy lifting to manage pipeline tasks for customers. With this new capability, Snowflake leverages serverless computing and machine learning capabilities to automatically manage and optimize warehouse size and idle policy based on the customer’s pipeline use case. GLOBAL EXPANSION

New Region Alert

Snowflake is expanding its availability to even more regions around the world. On Amazon Web Services (AWS), Snowflake now supports the US Gov West 1 region and Asia Pacific (Seoul). On Microsoft Azure, Snowflake supports Northern Europe (Ireland). With these additions, Snowflake supports 24 global regions across three cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Azure), as well as three regions across AWS and Azure for compliance with U.S. government regulations such as FIPS 140-2 and FedRAMP. View the full list of supported regions here.

SECURITY

Simplified Role Management with Secondary Roles

Secondary roles are now generally available, allowing all roles granted to a user to be activated in the user session. This means users can perform SQL actions on objects in a session using the aggregate privileges granted to the primary and secondary roles, instead of having to change roles depending on the action and privileges required. This simplifies role management, especially for organizations whose security model includes a large number of roles. Additionally, this is useful for operations such as cross-database joins, where different roles may have permissions to access objects in each database.
