In March, Snowflake released a number of exciting new capabilities including Python Worksheets, the Snowflake Connector for ServiceNow, and expanded support for geospatial data. Read on to learn more about the full set of features that were just announced.

Snowflake Connectors

Snowflake Connector for ServiceNow – public preview

Ingest data from ServiceNow into Snowflake automatically. The connector supports both the initial load of historical data as well as incremental updates. The latest data is regularly pulled from ServiceNow, and you control how frequently it is refreshed. See the Snowflake documentation for more info and get started today using the Quickstart Guide.

Data Pipelines

Snowpipe Streaming – public preview

While data generated in real time is valuable, it is more valuable when paired with historical data that helps provide context. With Snowpipe Streaming as a new framework for low-latency ingestions, developers can augment existing data-ingestion scenarios and stream Kafka topics and rowsets directly to Snowflake tables. Read our blog to learn more.

Streams on views – general availability (GA)

Streams on views extends table streams to track change data capture (CDC) records for views, including secure views. Learn more

Python Worksheets

Try Snowpark for Python within Snowflake – public preview

Python developers have always had flexibility in terms of which IDE/notebook to use; just install the Snowpark client API and connect to a Snowflake account. But to make it even faster to get started you can now develop in Snowflake using Python worksheet’s type-sensitive autocomplete and inline documentation – no install required to use Python libraries. Write simple Snowpark programs and deploy them as procedures — great for data engineers building pipelines. Read more.

Geospatial Support

New geospatial functions for shape transformation and orientation – public preview

Snowflake continues to lead in the geospatial space with the release of several new geospatial functions. These new functions—three for the GEOMETRY data type and one for the GEOGRAPHY data type—specifically streamline the process of performing orientation transformations. Learn more about what these new functions are and how they work in our recent blog post

Snowflake increases support for handling invalid geospatial shapes – public preview

Get more control over the validation and repair process when handling invalid shapes. With this release, Snowflake allows conversion functions to create GEOGRAPHY and GEOMETRY objects for invalid shapes. This release also makes it easy to determine if the shape for a GEOGRAPHY or GEOMETRY object is invalid. Learn more about how to get started in the Snowflake documentation.

Snowsight

New individual task observability visuals in Snowsight – general availability (GA)

Snowsight, the Snowflake interface, continues its march to help you get from data to decision faster by creating an interface that makes it easy to get common jobs done. With the GA release of individual task observability, tasks are now visible in a graph view to highlight dependencies and order of execution. With observability for individual task runs, you can perform monitoring tasks such as identifying long-running tasks, consistently skipped tasks, and databases with a high volume of tasks. Learn more about how to get started in the Snowflake documentation.

Snowgrid: Cross-Cloud Data Governance

Allow masked columns as inputs to row access policies and conditional masking policies – general availability (GA)

Advanced use cases require a masked column in a mapping table to be used as input to a row access policy for row-level authorization. With this feature release, the signature of a row access policy and a conditional masking policy can now specify a column protected by a masking policy. Learn more.

Snowgrid: Cross-Cloud Business Continuity

Account replication now supports notification integration – public preview

You can now replicate email and push notification integrations easily with Account Replication. Email notifications play a critical role in observability and monitoring of various workloads running in your Snowflake account, and now you can replicate these integrations to your secondary account. When an outage occurs and you decide to failover, these notification integrations are readily available, preventing the need for any manual workarounds and reducing recovery time objective (RTO).

Search Optimization Service

Column selection for search optimization; faster searches in VARIANT, ARRAY, OBJECT, and GEOGRAPHY data types; and faster substring searches in string columns – general availability (GA)

Snowflake customers now have the ability to select specific columns for search optimization to bring down costs and increase efficiency. The new features also enable customers to easily search in logs and semi-structured data stored in VARIANT, ARRAY, and OBJECT columns, which prove to be especially useful for cybersecurity vendors who perform needle-in-a-haystack-type queries. And lastly, customers can speed up GEOGRAPHY search predicates by utilizing the additional filters on these columns. Learn how customers are using Search Optimization Service today.
