In the final month of 2022, Snowflake rolled out new security capabilities, a native VSCode extension, as well as new Snowflake Marketplace providers across different categories.

Security

Database roles now in public preview

Database roles are a new Snowflake object type within a database. Privileges on securable objects within the same database can be assigned to database roles. This new access control feature enables data providers to define granular access permissions on individual objects within a data share, while also allowing roles in consumer accounts to be given access to objects in Native Apps. Database roles are now defined for the Snowflake Database share so customers can grant subsets of views. Additionally, database owners can now independently manage access (for SQL actions) on objects within their own databases without needing account-level privileges. Session Policies now generally available

Snowflake is excited to announce the general availability of Session Policies. With this new feature, customers can now define a session policy with a time limit for each session after which user(s) will have to re-authenticate with Snowflake again. Idle session timeouts can be configured for UI as well as programmatic and Snowflake clients. This helps customers to address the requirements from their compliance teams without procuring any exceptions. Session Policies allow security admins to balance security and usability needs for any type of user: admins, data analysts, service accounts, and more. Customers can create a single account-level policy for all users, or they can get very granular and override the account policy with a specific user-level policy. Learn more about the Session Policies release.
