Companies across the globe are stepping up their efforts to fight climate change, spurred by consumers and partners who are increasingly including sustainability in their buying and business decisions.
Given the very real and urgent stakes behind the global climate crisis, the need to collaborate is crucial—to ask questions, share information, get new perspectives and work together to inspire and affect real change.
At Snowflake, we have unique access to tangible and meaningful data that companies of all sizes can use to inform their sustainability efforts. Within Snowflake Data Marketplace, we’ve made it easy for our clients to leverage and analyze environmental data sets, and produce quantifiable results that can be shared within their organization, with customers, or with the world. Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of the Snowflake Data Collaboration for the Climate Initiative.
This initiative will provide data scientists with an opportunity to uncover hidden insights on how various technologies are impacting sustainability endeavors, on trends or patterns in environmental and business data sets that merit exploration, or other findings that spark curiosity and action.
Our hope is that, over time, access to this data will help drive decision-making in various sectors, both in how companies manage their own footprints as well as who they do business with. After all, the more such organizations can accurately track the progress they are making toward reducing their carbon footprint, while still driving growth in their own business, the more they can inspire change within their industries.
We are already seeing Snowflake customers like JetBlue and NatWest use data to great advantage. “The Snowflake Data Cloud allows real-time access to vendor data and has been a real breakthrough to accelerate our climate and ESG strategy,” said Kaushik GD, Head of ESG Cloud Solutions at NatWest.
In addition to businesses, program participation is open to individuals, NGOs, and government organizations. The more involvement fostered among those who can inform policy at the local, regional, and national levels, the more powerful this movement can become.
To get started, we invite all data scientists and interested parties to log into Snowflake Data Marketplace to access our environmental and sustainability data sets, including:
- Knoema data sets: OECD Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data, Monthly World Climatic Data, Daily Weather Data, Environmental Data Atlas, Water Data, Mining, Energy, Natural Gas, Air Quality, and Renewables Data Atlas
- OAG Emissions Data
- Weather Source Weather Data
- Accuweather Weather Forecasts data
- CSR Hub ESG Scores
- GaiaLens
We encourage you to perform analysis on the areas you are most passionate about, from emissions and air quality to water, biodiversity, waste, and natural disasters. (If you don’t yet have a Snowflake account, you can access a free trial.) Publish your results on social channels using the hashtag #DataCollab4Climate to share your findings with the community, and join our Collaboration for Climate discussion group to discuss ideas with other participants from around the world.
Of course, this initiative is just the start of something bigger. If you’re a provider of environmental data, we welcome you to join the initiative by enrolling in the Snowflake Partner Network and listing your data on Snowflake Data Marketplace today. If you’re a business leader driving ESG transformation at your own company, we encourage you to consider sharing your data here, too. After all, the more available data we can share with the world, the more comprehensive a story can be told over time, increasing our collective chance of making a significant impact on this important issue.
In the meantime, Snowflake will distribute your findings to thousands of businesses and sustainability advocates across the globe who can help turn your insights into realaction.
Together, we can build a sustainable future. That starts with helping more companies answer some of the big questions, such as “How do we get started?” and “How do we know which efforts will have the greatest impact?” and “What if we could do more?”
The more we can use data to answer those questions, the more we can help amplify your findings, and provide much-needed support to leaders as they implement meaningful changes to their business operations. Today marks an opportunity to put those side projects and “what if?” pet passions front and center, and transform them into scalable efforts that can lead to sweeping, substantial change. Start exploring today.
